Issue: Redistricting

We are once again in the midst of a redistricting process within our district to define what the neighborhoods are for our neighborhood schools. It is unclear whether these changes will occur for 2004-2005 or 2005-2006.

Originally, principals were supposed to choose parent representatives from their schools to participate in the redistricting committee. At some point, it was decided by staff to hand-pick a steering committee of five of the parents from this pool from different areas of the District. Because of the sudden change in procedure, Bayside PTA asked to be included in the steering committee as a general parent representative. We were rebuffed.

At the Nov. 19th School Board meeting, the redistricting process seemed to have been put on hold by the Board, pending the report of a temporary committee of George Harris and Karen Fenton, because of concerns about the process. But, somehow the temporary Board committee has simply been rolled into the steering committee, while the steering committee has proceeded to have 3 more meeting with a general meeting planned for late January.
